Onassis Grants and Scholarships for Foreign Scholars and Students

The Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation announces the inauguration of a special program of grants and scholarships addressed to foreign scholars, researchers and students of humanistic and political sciences, Hellenists, teachers, artists and translators of Greek literature.

The Foundation decided to award the following grants and scholarships beginning in October 1995. The starting period of the program will be October or February of every year.

A) RESEARCH GRANTS

These grants are addresses to foreign scholars in university or research institutions and academies, and are allotted as follows:

AI
Up to 5 grants for a one month stay in Greece will be offered to academics and university professors whose scientific work has been widely acclaimed and who wish to visit Greece in order to conduct research or to collaborate with scientific institutions and/or/organizations (Application Form AI).
AII
Up to 5 grants for a maximum duration of 6 months each will be offered to university researchers (maximum age 50 years old) who wish to perform research in Greece in cooperation with a Greek university, research venture, institute, or other scientific organization (Application Form AII).

B) POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GREEK LANGUAGE TEACHERS

These scholarships, no more than 5 and for a maximum duration of 2 months, are addressed to active elementary or high school teachers from abroad who teach Greek language, literature, history and civilization.

These scholarships aim at rendering possible the acquaintance. collaboration and mutual information of such postgraduate teachers with their Greek colleagues in Greek schools and pedagogic departments of Greek universities.

This program presupposes that the teachers to be granted scholarships will continue offering their services to their country of origin after they have completed the postgraduate training. For this reason a recommendation of the Director of the school of the educational institution where the applicant teacher is teaching is necessary.

C) POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS

These scholarships, no more than 10 and for a maximum duration of 12 months, are addressed to foreign postgraduate and Ph.D. students not more than 40 years old who pursue theoretical or artistic studies in universities, scientific centers or Fine Arts schools.

The subject of the thesis or Ph.D. dissertation should be approved in advance by the university or institution, and the supervising professor must concur in the necessity of conduction the study in Greece.

NATURE OF THE GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

At the Foundation's discretion and on a case by case basis, the above grants and scholarships will consist of either a monthly remuneration which will cover room and board costs, or a daily remuneration plus room, with or without board. The Foundation will also cover travel costs from and to the country of origin.

During their stay in Greece, the above scholars, researchers, postgraduate students or teachers will be invited, on a case by case basis, to deliver a lecture or conduct a seminar either at the Onassis Cultural Center of Athens or at a university or at another scientific or cultural center.

GENERAL INFORMATION

It is specified that, in principle, only alien-born foreigners are eligible. However, as an exception to this rule, foreigners of Greek origin (second generation and on) may also be eligible, provided that they are permanently residing and working abroad, or that they have studied or are studying in foreign universities.

Knowledge of the Greek language, wherever not necessary by definition, i.e. for scientific purposes or postgraduate study, is not absolutely necessary. However, elementary knowledge of Greek will be favorably taken into consideration when the various proposals and applications are evaluated.
